Hey everyone! Episode seven of the Three Strikes…yer OUT! podcast is now published and available on apple podcasts in iTunes. Next up, something a little different! This will be game-by-game commentary on the complete 1972 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the Oakland A’s! This is still one of my favorite World Series of all time. It was a nail biter to the end and featured some all-time great plays, fantastic pitching, and some surprise heroics. (No spoilers here…heh, heh!) This is an extra long episode, so sit back, relax, open a cold beverage, and enjoy one of the classic World Series in Major League Baseball history. Enjoy!

Next up, a biography of one of the great Baltimore Oriole First Baseman, Boog Powell! He was the power on the best Orioles teams ever in the 1960’s and early 1970’s! I remember these teams like they were yesterday!

Career Highlights:

  • He won the American League Most Valuable Player Award (1970).
  • He was an American League Champion with the Orioles in 1966, 1969, 1970 and 1971.
  • He was a World Series Champion twice with the Orioles (1966, 1970).

Since it is October and the World Series is upon us, how about a biography of possibly the greatest World Series pitcher of all time, Bob Gibson?! Owner of the all-time live-ball ERA record (1.12), this guy is one of the best ever!

Career Highlights:

  • He was an 9-time All-Star.
  • He won the Gold Glove 9 times in a row as a pitcher.
  • He was the 2nd player ever to get 3,000 strikeouts.
  • He was a 2-time National League Cy Young Award winner.
  • He won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1968.
  • He was a World Series Champion twice with the Cardinals.
  • He still holds the record for Most Strikeouts in a World Series game (17).
  • And…he still has the record for the lowest ERA in a season (1.12) in the live ball era in Major League Baseball!

Career Highlights:

  • He was the 1960 National League Rookie of the Year.
  • He was a 4-time All-Star.
  • He was a 2-time American League Home Run leader.
  • He was a World Series Champion with the Dodgers in 1963.
  • He still has the record for hitting the most home runs in one week…hitting an amazing 10 home runs in 20 at bats!.
  • He was famous for hitting many documented 500 foot home runs!

This is a photo of the Oakland Coliseum that is marked with a red “X” where Frank Howard’s massive homerun landed in the iceplant that a good buddy of mine actually witnessed! This homerun was hit somewhere in the 1969-1971 timeframe. See the 2nd flagpole from the left just near the Michelin sign. Awesome shot!

  • He won the Triple Crown in 1967.
  • He is the first American League player to make the 3,000 hit club and also hit over 400 home runs.

  • He pitched a perfect game on May 8, 1968 against the Minnesota Twins. He is the youngest man to have ever pitched a perfect game.
  • He made the American League All Star team 8 times.
  • He won the American League Cy Young award in 1974.
  • He pitched on five World Series championship teams, including 3 with the Oakland A’s and 2 with the New York Yankees.
